Stainless steel countertops usually bring to mind an image of a hospital, emergency room or some type of clinical setting. However, nearly all restaurants kitchens have stainless countertops installed everywhere you look. Never the less, most people who are building new homes or doing a little kitchen remodeling are not immediately drawn to stainless kitchen countertops.

Stainless kitchen countertops are in the price range of about $100 to $200 per square foot. Stainless on its own does not rust, corrode or stain as easily as commonplace steel does. Stainless, even though it seems to contradict its name, is only stain resistant not completely staining proof. Acidic foods and chlorine bleaches will stain or corrode stainless unless it is quickly and thoroughly rinsed off.

Stainless steel kitchen countertops are durable and long lasting, but, over time they will age. Because stainless steel is a softer metal, just with ordinary use your stainless countertop can become scratched or dented. Deep indentations or scratches may be difficult or completely impossible to remove. Maybe most importantly, stainless will compliment any other color that you may choose to dress your kitchen in; your imagination is the only thing that can limit you.
